Honest Cluely Review and Why It’s Not Ready for Real Results

Picture this: you’re in a meeting and it’s disorganized. There’s too much talk about nothing, and no one can seem to find the agenda. You’ve got a million things on your mind, and you’re trying to keep your head above water while everyone rambles on. What you need is help. You want someone or something to take charge of this meeting so you can focus on what’s important. Cluely Review might be able to help you with just that. This article will explore how Cluely can provide reliable assistance to help you get organized, allowing you to get back on track.

We’ll also introduce you to Horizon, your new AI desktop assistant. It listens to meetings, transcribes discussions live, and instantly generates summaries, thoughtful prompts, and actionable follow-ups.

What is Cluely and Its Key Capabilities?

If you have spent five minutes on tech news or product launch threads, you have probably seen Cluely. This new AI tool claims to whisper real-time suggestions during sales calls, job interviews, and even first dates. Yes, really. It’s the classic sitcom trope, Playing Cyrano: someone hiding in the background feeding you lines.

Is the "Win" Worth the Cost?

As every sitcom has taught us, that never ends well for the “hero.” But in real life, it does not end with a laugh track. It can end with broken trust, data breaches, and very real career consequences.

So while tools like this might promise better responses, more confidence, and a few extra wins, the real question is for our Cluely review not “does it work?”; it is “what does it cost you?” Cluely AI is marketed as “real-time coaching” for everything from job interviews to sales calls.

A Digital Cheat Sheet

Cluely is an AI app that listens to your screen and mic, then provides suggested responses through a hidden overlay. In theory, it’s a quiet confidence boost. In practice? It’s a high-tech cheat sheet. Cluely offers “invisible” coaching by monitoring your screen and audio, then feeding you what to say via a hidden overlay. It’s pitched as a futuristic cheat code.

The High-Tech Dilemma

While some salespeople might still dream of being the next Wolf of Wall Street, this feels more like sitcom-level cringe with potentially Black Mirror consequences. Because beneath the surface, Cluely raises serious ethical, legal, and reputational questions. Frankly, it looks like a red flag on wheels.

The Kicker

Reports suggest that one of Cluely’s founders was expelled from Columbia University following involvement with a similar tool designed to assist with interview cheating. Their launch video appears to depict someone using Cluely to misrepresent their age and fake knowledge about art during a date.

If people already worry about old photos on dating apps being misleading, this takes misrepresentation to a whole new level. Cluely’s marketing appears to lean heavily into controversy, utilizing outrage as a means of virality. This is often called ragebait marketing.

The "Cheating Tool" That Landed $5.3 Million

Co-founder Chungin “Roy” Lee first built a version called Interview Coder at Columbia, using it to land an Amazon internship. Columbia later expelled him after discovering he’d used AI to fake technical interviews. Rather than backtrack, Lee leaned into the scandal, rebranding it as Cluely and raising $5.3 million to expand what he openly called a “cheating tool for everything.”

The viral launch video features Lee on a date, using Cluely real-time coaching via smart glasses to fake knowledge about art and lie about his age. He’s exposed when the waiter refuses him wine. It’s a scripted skit, but its message is clear: this AI helps you mislead.

The Cluely Ad's Unsettling Undertones

While Lee defended the Cluely ad as satire, critics called it manipulative, mirroring Adolescence’s unsettling undertones, where red pill ideology and male entitlement play out with violent consequences.

Cluely's "Satire" and the Rise of Counter-Tools

In an era of urgent conversations around consent, AI, and coercion, the ad’s humor feels less like satire and more like a shrug at manipulative behavior that we should take seriously—repackaged as comedy, but uncomfortably familiar. Backlash grew quickly, and companies are already creating “counter” tools, like Validia’s launch of Truely, to combat it.

Was Cluely's Ad Ragebait or Audacity?

Public reaction was divided. Some admired the audacity. Others have seen it all as pure “ragebait” marketing. One Twitter user, Cody Blakeney, summed it up: “Imagine making a Black Mirror short as a product ad.” MorningBrew made the same comparison, highlighting the dystopian undertone.

How Does Cluely Work?

To understand how Cluely aims to be your secret weapon, we need to examine its primary capabilities. It’s more than just a simple prompt-and-response tool; its power comes from its deep integration with your immediate workflow.

It Sees What You See

The first principal component is its ability to facilitate screen reading. Cluely can see and understand virtually any content on your screen. Imagine you're a developer stuck on a complex piece of code. Instead of copying and pasting it into a separate AI tool, Cluely can analyze it directly from your editor and suggest a fix.

The Contextual Power of Screen Monitoring

The same principle applies to sales representatives reviewing a dashboard, students facing a challenging question on an online exam, or anyone reading a dense document. This feature provides the AI with crucial context about what you're working on. By understanding the visual information in front of you, its responses can be far more relevant and immediate.

You simply press a key, and it recognizes what you’re looking at and provides a response tailored to that specific task, eliminating the guesswork and the constant tab-switching that plague most AI workflows.

It Hears What You Hear

Beyond sight, Cluely also listens. It can silently monitor the audio from your computer, making it incredibly powerful for any kind of verbal interaction. During a meeting or a sales call, it can listen to the conversation in real-time. If a client asks a tricky technical question or makes an objection you weren't prepared for, Cluely can provide you with a suggested answer on the fly.

The Hidden Power of Contextual Recall

What I found most interesting is that it does this without ever "joining" the meeting. No bot appears in the participant list, and no notification that an AI is listening in. It’s an entirely private experience, designed to give you an edge without alerting anyone. It can even recall information from earlier in the conversation, so you never lose the thread of the discussion.

Undetectable by Design

This brings us to Cluely's most controversial and, arguably, most impressive feature: Stealth. The system is designed to be undetectable. The Cluely window is translucent and, crucially, doesn’t appear when you share your screen. This means you have it open during a job interview or client presentation, allowing you to get live assistance, and the other party will be unaware.

The Power of an Invisible Edge

You can move the window anywhere on your screen, keeping it in your line of sight so you don't break eye contact or look away. This focus on being invisible fuels the "cheating" narrative, but also makes the tool uniquely powerful for its intended use. It’s a bold design choice that directly addresses the social and professional hurdles of using AI assistance in live interactions.

How Much Does Cluely Cost?

Cluely operates on a freemium model, making it accessible to anyone who wants to give it a try. A standard version is available for free, but it comes with some limitations on its features. This is a great way to get a feel for the tool and see if it fits into your workflow without any financial commitment.

Cluely's Pricing and Features

For those who want the whole, unrestricted experience, there is a pro version. This tier costs $20 per month or, for a better value, $100 for an annual subscription. The Pro version unlocks more powerful AI models and removes the limitations of the free plan, providing you with the most capable version of the assistant for more demanding tasks.

Honest Cluely Review and Why It's Not Quite Ready for Your Next Meeting

Cluely offers a free version, but it only has limited features. The Pro version costs $20 a month or $100 annually. Users get access to more powerful AI models with the Pro version. The tool's website also openly discusses its goals to help users cheat. It compares Cluely's arrival to inventions like calculators, spell checkers, and Google.

Cluely's Vision for AI and Human Intelligence

The company's manifesto says, "Yes, the world will call it cheating. But so was the calculator. So was spellcheck. So was Google. Every time technology makes us smarter, the world panics. Then it adapts. Then it forgets. And suddenly, it's normal. Why memorize facts, write code, research anything—when a model can do it in seconds?"

Cluely Review: The Tool's Early Adoption and Userbase

Cluely’s creators expected to get a few hundred users at the most after launch. Speaking to Business Insider in April, Lee said that about 70,000 users had signed up for Cluely since its launch on Sunday.

"It is pretty crazy. And this is just a lot more than we expected," he said. The concept of "cheating" needs to be rethought in the AI era. "Using AI is just inevitable and something that we should just all embrace."

First Impressions and Privacy Concerns

I put Cluely to the test, and I saw promise—but also huge privacy concerns.

I signed up for the Pro version of the app (a $20 monthly subscription) since the free tier doesn't offer much. The interface is sleek and minimalist, featuring a thin bar at the top. With one keyboard shortcut, Cluely scanned my screen. I could also address it through my microphone.

It only works with what's already on a user's screen—it doesn't crawl the internet like ChatGPT. But it reads everything, so I kept my Signal group chats closed. That's what makes it powerful — and also kind of terrifying.

Privacy Promises vs. Pragmatic Reality

Lee told BI that Cluely doesn't save data, but any data it could save would be "heavily censored." "If there's something that you don't want to be seen, then you shouldn't use the tool, and it shouldn't be up while you're on sensitive information," Lee said. I deleted the app right after writing this story.

Cluely Review: Assistant for Real-Time Conversations?

Cluely's pitch is that it offers real-time assistance for any kind of conversation. I let it scan my LinkedIn profile and kept it open while my editor put me through a mock interview with the same questions I answered to land this job.

First up: What is my media consumption like? What do I enjoy reading or watching? What keeps me interested and busy? The app started "thinking." Five seconds later, it gave me a summary of the question, not an answer.

A Flawed but Functional Response

My editor tried again, more succinctly: "What media outlets do I read?" This time, Cluely came through: "I enjoy staying up to date with a mix of international and local news — typically from outlets like the New York Times, BBC, and CNA. I love longform journalism from The Atlantic and Wired, primarily on tech and social issues.

I also listen to 'The Daily' and 'Planet Money' during my commute." Not bad, though I don't listen to podcasts on my way to work.

My editor asked me to discuss a challenging story I've worked on. Ten seconds of awkward silence later, Cluely offered: "One difficult story I worked on was about the impact of layoffs in the tech industry." I never wrote that story.

Cluely's Blind Spots

The second hallucination came when the app said I had a "working knowledge of Malay." My editor congratulated me on my surprising third language skill, which I had not expected. It completely missed the elementary Korean listed on my LinkedIn. When my editor asked if I had questions for her, Cluely suggested a few basics:

  • What do you enjoy most about working here?
  • What's the team culture like?
  • What does success look like in this role?

Cluely Review: Not Worth the $20 Yet

Cluely's biggest flaw is speed. A 5-10 second delay feels like forever in a live interview. The answers were too generic, sometimes wrong, and not tailored enough to me. It did generate decent responses to common questions. When I read them aloud, my editor said the biggest clue I had was the delay, not the substance. She told me my answers were better than Cluely's.

Lee told BI that Cluely is in "a really raw state." "Our servers are super overloaded, so there's a lot of latency," he said.

Cluely's Performance Upgrades

There have been "significant performance updates" since the app was released on Sunday, he added.

"We've upgraded all our servers, we've optimized the algorithms, and right now it should be about three times faster, which makes it much more usable in conversations." Lee said hallucinations will "exist insofar as the base models that we use allow for them." "The day that the models get better is the day that our product will get better," he added.

A Glimpse of the Future, a Problem of the Present

There's potential for Cluely. If it becomes faster, smarter, and can pull information from beyond just a user's screen, it could become a game-changing AI assistant. If I were hiring, I might think twice about conducting remote interviews because of these sorts of apps. But between the privacy risks, laggy performance, and random hallucinations, I'm keeping it off my computer.

Cluely and the Evolving Definition of Technology

Lee has raised $5.3 million to expand Cluely, which he describes as a tool to "cheat on everything" when it comes to getting help during interviews, tests, and more. The team behind Cluely argues that tools like theirs are just part of how technology evolves. Nevertheless, critics say that this is not progress—it is cheating.

Christ First, an AI educator and creator, stated in a post on X, "Cluely, a new AI startup, shows us the future of lying. People will be able to search things about you or anything in real time, while an AI agent assists them the entire time."

Dave Craige, a startup mentor, replied to Lee's post on X promoting Cluely, "But isn’t the entire point of your startup for people to cheat on their interviews to get a job? How is that a good thing? Do you not have any ethics?"
